What do you get when you mix science, cinema, and community engagement? A great opportunity to view a fantastic movie coupled with engaging scientific discussion. That’s what happened today when Dr. Gomillion participated in the Science on Screen: Travel Through Science in Film series hosted by Cine in Athens and moderated by our own Dr. Golan. Through this unique series of four events, attendees have the opportunity to view a film highlighting various scientific topics, followed by a panel discussion with scientific experts in relevant fields. Following the film Frankenstein (2025), Dr. Gomillion and colleague Dr. Jarrod Call from UGA discussed the role tissue engineering advances and the role of physiological challenges in “body building”. Definitely check out the two remaining films in the series happening this month! Learn more here: https://www.athenscine.com/science-on-screen

We’re excited to welcome two new faces to our group. Joining us as a new Postdoctoral Associate is Dr. Morgane Golan, a recent graduate of the UGA Regenerative Bioscience program. In addition, we are excited to have Rob Andre, Jr. joining us from the University of Connecticut as part of the CMaT Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program. Welcome to you both!!

We made it to the end of another semester. What better time to take a break from studying, exams, projects, etc. than enjoying a little lab outing. We exercised different parts of our brains as we escaped the space. Congrats to us for a successful mission! Good luck to all wrapping up the semester.

We have been busy lately. This week was the annual Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (CURO) Symposium held at the Classic Center. We were well-represented by three of our undergrads, Lily, Emilie, and Asu who all did a great job presenting their work. It’s always a wonderful event for sharing our work on campus and learning what others are doing as well. Nice job, everyone!

BIG CONGRATULATIONS to Erika Landree, 2026 recipient of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship!!

Erika first joined the lab in 2022 working with her student mentor, now Dr. Damion Dixon. Her project has focused on creating a biomimetic bone model for studying breast cancer metastasis, for which she completed an undergraduate thesis in 2024. With support from UGA Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (CURO) in the form of Research Assistantships and Conference Travel Grant, Erika has presented her work at multiple conferences and even won the Best Paper Award for Technology, Engineering, & Math in Spring 2025 at the CURO Symposium, which was featured in their Journal of Undergraduate Research Opportunities.

With multiple publications, presentations and experience under her belt, Erika graduated from University of Georgia College of Engineering in December 2025 with her B.S. in Biological Engineering program with CURO graduation distinction and honors. She has continued in the lab as a Research Assistant, but will soon be continuing her educational pursuits this fall working towards competing her PhD in biomedical engineering. CONGRATULATIONS, ERIKA! We’re so proud! 🎉🎉🎉

It was an exciting time today as we celebrated honorees and award winners at the College of Engineering Celebration of Excellence dinner. We were particularly honored to celebrate the excellent job of two Gomillion Lab members who were recognized.

Current PhD candidate, Erika was awarded the College of Engineering Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award, a well-deserved recognition of her work in the classroom!

Recent UGA/Gomillion Lab alum and current FDA/NIH postdoc, Dr. Kyndra was selected for the College of Engineering Outstanding Dissertation Award for her dissertation work, which she defended last summer. So glad you were able to make it back to Athens to be celebrated!

Congratulations to you both on a job well done!! 🎉🎊

We don’t have to travel far for this one, but that doesn’t change how excited we are for the Society For Biomaterials meeting this week in ATL. It’s always a great time for networking, learning, and connecting with old and new friends at this meeting. Come see representatives from Gomillion Lab throughout the week!
