What a day! We’ve all survived the end of exams and today, we survived/escaped the Dorm Room at Urban Enigma of Athens–Gomillion Lab successfully escaped with a whole 12 minutes to spare! A fun time was had by all at today’s lab outing with a fun team activity and holiday celebration (we missed you Nancy and Sarah!) Happy end of semester!!

The CURO Summer Fellows Research Symposium was held today. As a summer fellowship awardee, lab member and UGA Honors Program member, Ridge Maxson, was invited to present a research seminar on his work completed in the CURO program. Nice job, Ridge! Today was our lab re-opening inspection, and after a successful inspection, we are officially “open for business” again. Not really. We are still waiting for a few work orders to be completed before being fully operational, but we are unpacked and eagerly awaiting our chance to get going again. Check out our new setup.

We’re moving! We’ve been busy this week packing the lab and Dr. Gomillion’s office for a move to Riverbend South. We will miss our Driftmier family, but look forward to settling into our new space. What a way to start the summer!

It’s graduation day! Today was a big day for our lab as our first graduate student, Ritopa Das, completed her Master’s degree in Engineering. Congratulations are also in order for undergraduate lab members, Jeremy Miller and Bryanna Moppins (not pictured), who completed their B.S. degrees in Biological Engineering and Biology, respectively. Congratulations graduates!

What a great day to “Introduce a Girl to Engineering”! Dr. Gomillion and students represented the College of Engineering (who served as a co-sponsor of the event) at the Introduce a Girl to Engineering event hosted by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Georgia. The event was held in Atlanta at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History, and a great time was had by all. Thank you to Ritopa Das, Mackenzie Carter, Priya Sighna, and Maryam Pirmoradi for helping with this outreach event!

Look whose photo appeared in an article featured on the UGA homepage! UGA was recently awarded funding from the National Science Foundation to increase participate of underrepresented students in graduate programs as an extension of the LSAMP program. Lab member Bryanna Moppins is an LSAMP participant and soon-to-be alumni of program and UGA graduate. Learn more about this award here.

The Society For Biomaterials annual meeting was held this week in Minneapolis, MN. Dr. Gomillion was co-organizer and moderator for a session entitled “Evaluation of Tissue Engineering Constructs”, and undergraduate researcher, Kerri Andre, attended and presented a poster of her work entitled “Controlled Linoleic Acid Release in a Hydrogel-Based Mammary Adipose Tissue Model”

Today was a big day as members of the Gomillion Tissue RegenX Lab presented their work at the annual Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (CURO) Symposium held at the Classic Center here in Athens. The Gomillion Lab was well-represented with 4 posters and 1 podium presentation. Great job, everyone!
