Great day for a lab holiday outing! Lab members successfully escaped the terminal at Escape the Space. With UGA grab bag gifts thrown in, it was a great way to kick off the holiday season for students.

Dr. Gomillion participated in a virtual career panel for students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Sponsored by the Society For Biomaterials, the panel was comprised of faculty of various backgrounds who described their career paths during the virtual session.

Dr. Gomillion served as a co-host of the virtual portion of the BMES Celebration of Minorities Luncheon Panel. As part of the BMES Diversity Committee, Dr. Gomillion worked with other members of the Underrepresented Minority Subcommittee to organize the virtual session focused on mental health and wellness.

Congratulations to lab member Daniel Shah for being awarded the 2021 CMaT Diversity and Inclusion Award during the annual retreat. Awarded to a CMaT trainee who has excelled in support of CMaT’s Diversity and Inclusion efforts, Daniel was recognized in part for his service in student mentoring, outreach efforts, and service on the Student Leadership Committee. Well-deserved!

Congratulations to Dr. Gomillion and her colleagues Drs. Burg and Birkes for their newly awarded grant from NIH to support a new ESTEEMED program at UGA. This award, University of Georgia (UGA) ESTEEMED: Mentored Experiential Research to Promote Diversity in Biomedical Engineering and Science, will support programming to encourage freshmen from diverse backgrounds to pursue further studies or careers in bioengineering research.

It has been a busy week for the lab with a conference also taking place. Dr. Gomillion gave an invited talk at the Institute of Biological Engineering (IBE) annual meeting and doctoral student Damion Dixon presented his work during the graduate student poster session. Damion was awarded 3rd place award for graduate poster presentations. Congratulations, Damion!
