With the ongoing pandemic, our end-of-semester holiday “outing” moved to a virtual Zoom room. Fun times were had by all (thanks to pre-prepared goodie bags) with an ornament coloring contest, holiday crossword puzzle, and Christmas Scattergories, along with other games and prizes. Wishing everyone a safe and healthy holiday season!

The BMES Annual Meeting is happening this week. Although it is virtual, there is still a lot happening. Dr. Gomillion helped moderate a townhall held during the Minority Luncheon with BMES leadership. Such great discussion!

Who knows what normal is anymore, but we’re still trying to do what we can. Even under the current circumstances, we are “hosting” a summer student. Welcome Cristian Benito Elias (University of South Florida) who will be joining us for the virtual NSF CMaT REU program this summer. We hope you enjoy the experience!

We are still shut down and adjusting to this virtual world. Our Zoom skills have rapidly improved, though. Our last lab meeting before exams start was a success, but we’re all looking forward to returning to normal soon.

It’s Christmas in February for our lab! We are excited to have received our new Maestro Z impedance-based cell analysis system from Axion Biosystems. Many thanks to Axion and the Georgia Research Alliance for their support of our lab!

Congratulations to Dr. Gomillion for receiving a Faculty Grant from Venturewell! This award, Design Achieved with Generosity (DAWG): Integration of Engineering Design and Clinical Immersion for Solving Unmet Medical Needs for Underserved Populations, is in collaboration with colleagues Dr. Jonathan Murrow from the AU/UGA Medical Partnership and Tim Martin and Kevin Wu from UGA Innovation Gateway, and aims to support a Biodesign-inspired capstone design experience with community care clinics. Very excited for this project to begin!

We weren’t able to have our usual lab outing before the holiday break, so we made up for it today. We ventured to Lumberjaxe for an afternoon of axe throwing and food. Everyone had a safe and fun time, with a few bullseyes secured. We’ll have to do this again.
