Congratulations to former Gomillion Lab REU student, Awa Bakayoko! Awa was awarded a Student Travel Award to attend the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) in Tampa, FL this year to present her work from the summer 2016 NanoBio REU program. For her poster presentation at the ABRCMS meeting, Awa also received an Undergraduate Poster Presentation Award for the Engineering, Math & Physics category. Congratulations!!

Dr. Gomillion and Gomillion Lab member, Jenna Alsaleh attended the IEEE Women in Engineering Leadership Summit that was held in Atlanta, GA and facilitated by Summit Chair, Dr. Takoi Hamrita of UGA CENGR.
Jenna was recipient of an IEEE Women in Engineering STEM Leadership Summit UGA Dean’s Travel Scholarship that provided funding for her participation and attendance.
Dr. Gomillion served as a co-organizer and moderator for the STEM Education and Outreach panel entitled “FIRESIDE CHAT: HOW UNIVERSITIES ARE ADVOCATING FOR STEM”, which featured co-organizer Cathy Freeman and invited panelists Serita Acker (Director, PEER/WISE, Clemson University, College of Eng., Computing and Applied Sciences) and Jennifer Stanford Johnson (STEAM Program Development Manager, Spelman College).

The 2016 NanoBIO REU poster session was held today, and students from the summer research programs on campus had an opportunity to present their work performed this summer. Our lab had the pleasure of hosting Awa Bakayoko (University of Maryland-Baltimore County, co-mentor Dr. Melissa Davis in Genetics) this summer. Great job, Awa!

Welcome back, Dr. Gomillion! Dr. Gomillion traveled to Uganda at the beginning of the summer with students from the Peach State Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) program as part of an undergraduate research program sponsored by the NSF. During the 8-week program, three LSAMP students conducted research evaluating various fuel sources for use in conjunction with an EvaKuula Unit, which provides a means for cooling milk on dairy farms in Sub-Saharan Africa. The cooling unit was developed by Dr. William Kisaalita of our College of Engineering, who has established various research endeavors in Uganda over the past several years.
