We have reached the end of another semester. Classes have wrapped up, so we made good use of the time by taking an opportunity for our end-of-semester outing. It seems a lab favorite and tradition has become trying our hand at escape rooms. We’re getting pretty good though – another successful escape today! Good luck with exams and a safe holiday break to everyone!!

It’s been a whirlwind summer. We’ve reached the end of summer programs, with the CMaT REU ending today. The summer was capped off with trainees participating in the campus Summer Research Symposium, where our REU trainee, Gustavo, presented his work from the summer. Many thanks to Erika B. from our lab and all other graduate student mentors in the program for their mentorship during the program. Farewell to Gustavo and the other REU trainees!

We also concluded the UGA ESTEEMED and LSAMP Summer Bridge programs today. It was a great summer getting to know everyone, and we look forward to welcoming you back to campus in the fall!

June 25-28, 2023
Lab member Pravalika had the opportunity to attend the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Annual Meeting in Baltimore this week, representing the lab and our work on a collaborative project with our colleagues from the college’s Engineering Education Transformations Institute (EETI). We’re very excited that our paper, Introduction of a Virtual Reality Laboratory in a Tissue Engineering Course, won the 2023 Best Paper Award for the Biomedical Engineering Division (BED)! We’re very appreciative of this recognition.

We’re celebrating! Thursday and Friday of this week were all about celebrating our new graduate, Dr. Dixon! We survived the heat on Thursday morning during the Graduate Commencement ceremony, where Dr. Dixon was officially hooded. Farewell dinner with the lab was a great way to wrap up the day. Then, on Friday things came to a close with the College of Engineering Convocation ceremony. We’re so proud of you, Damion, and wish you well in Texas!

What’s a good way to destress at the end of the semester and take a brain break to relax before exams? A lab paint party on Reading Day! We put our artistic skills to the test this afternoon at ARTini’s Art Lounge here in the Bottleworks complex. We definitely had to concentrate for tricky color mixing and detail painting, but a fun time was had by everyone as we put our own spin on the UGA letters. In addition to a destress activity for everyone, we also had a chance to bid farewell to our Young Dawgs student Viveka and a pre-farewell to Dr. Dixon before graduation. Great times to wrap up the semester!

April 19-22, 2023
Dr. G and Damion had the chance to travel to San Diego for the Society For Biomaterials Annual Meeting. Damion had a chance to present his work, and overall, it was a great time for networking and hearing about the latest research with pretty nice views. It could have been a little warmer, but we appreciated the scenery.

We have BIG NEWS…..Dr. Gomillion has been promoted to Associate Professor and awarded tenure!! The official notification came to her in February, and we have already helped kickoff the celebration of this great milestone. But, the news recently went campus wide, so we had to be sure it was highlighted here. We are all so very excited!
From Dr. G, “I am so very grateful to all of my students, past and present, that helped make this possible. It has not always been an easy path, but reaching this point has made every moment worthwhile. I look forward to continuing our lab’s work and cannot wait to see what the future holds!”
CONGRATULATIONS, DR. G!!!!

We were excited to welcome a visitor to lab for the day. Brice, a student from Maynard Jackson High School spent the day shadowing Damion in lab today, learning about cell culture and bioprinting. He even had a chance to practice his pipetting skills! It was great having him spend the day with us.

It’s been a busy time, but we must take a moment to recognize our undergraduate researchers. First, kudos to Eric who has wrapped up his time in lab, but recently had a chance to present his research at the McNair Scholars Research Conference in Maryland. Such a great opportunity!
Also, today was the UGA Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (CURO) Symposium. Held at the Classic Center, this event was a great opportunity to learn about all of the research being conducted by undergrads across campus. We were well represented by undergrad lab members Erika and Ciara at this event. Nice job by everyone!

Today was a very exciting day today with graduate student Damion successfully defending his dissertation entitled Conductive Scaffolds for Bone Tissue Engineering: Systematic Approaches for Developing Hybrid Hard Tissue Replacements via Biomimetic Composition. Many thanks to his committee members, Drs. Eric Freeman, William Kisaalita, and Ramana Pidaparti. It has been quite a journey, but we have our first Ph.D. from the lab. Nice job and many CONGRATULATIONS to Dr. Dixon!! Graduation2023Loading

We were very excited to have collaborators from Axion Biosystems visit the lab last week so we could try out their new Maestro TrayZ live-cell analysis platform. Graduate students Kyndra and Pravalika were able to use the instrument in their experiments for collecting valuable data. We appreciate these opportunities to use new tools and technology to advance our work!
